Capitalizing on the rapid development of Chinese economy, Hong Kong has become an important international financial centre and is widely regarded as one of the fastest growing export-oriented economies in the Asia-Pacific region. In recent years, Hong Kong has successfully attracted enterprises from all over the world to list their companies here, especially Chinese enterprises. The market weighting of state-owned and privately-owned enterprises has increased gradually in the equity market, which suggests a growing impact of mainland Chinese economy on the development of Hong Kong stock market. The main types are divided into blue chips, red chips and H shares.
Referring to the listed companies which have long history, steady returns and large capital. The blue chips in Hong Kong actually represent the companies with the British and Chinese capital, such as the British-owned HSBC, Swire Group, the Chinese-owned CITIC Pacific and Cheung Kong Holdings. These companies are also the driving force behind the prosperity of Hong Kong stocks over the past decades; a 1%–2% price move can affect the whole market.
Referring to the listed companies with major shareholders directly from Mainland China, whose business may be located in Hong Kong, China or overseas but the largest controlling interests are directly or indirectly affiliated with companies in China. With business operations across Hong Kong and the Mainland, red chips combine the scale of the China market with advanced corporate governance, and offer higher transparency in their financial reports.
Referring to the Chinese-owned companies listed in Hong Kong. In general, H-share companies are quite large, mostly in basic industries and leaders in their fields. H shares are regulated both by the securities authorities in China and under Hong Kong securities law — a double protection. Some H-share companies also issue A shares in China, and H shares generally offer good dividend yields.

Stock market in the United States is the largest stock market in the world with the greatest market capitalization of listed companies and the highest trading volume, comprising several exchanges among which there are a total of as many as 5,000 companies listed on NYSE Euronext and Nasdaq Stock Market. All companies listed in the U.S. are required to publish quarterly results, and to disclose important information in compliance with regulatory requirements under strict market supervision. All these make the U.S. stock market ideal to invest in.
Based in Wall Street, New York City, NYSE is considered the longest-history, largest and most famous stock exchange, with more than 3,000 listed companies. It is a sophisticated market with strict listing requirements.
Operating since 1971 with nearly 7,000 corporations listed, mostly technology companies. It is the second-largest stock exchange by trading volume in the United States.
The third-largest US stock exchange by trading volume, located near Wall Street, with more than 1,000 mostly small- to mid-size listed enterprises. AMEX merged with Nasdaq in 1998, while the two markets still operate independently.
Invented by Charles Dow back in 1896, the oldest and most watched index in the world — a price-weighted average of 30 significant stocks traded in the United States.
Owned and maintained by Standard & Poor’s: 500 stocks chosen for market size, liquidity and industry grouping, widely regarded as a better representation of the U.S. market and one of the most commonly used benchmarks worldwide.
Launched in 1971, measuring all domestic and international common stocks listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market, calculated under a market-capitalization-weighted methodology.
